The Island Capraia is the northwestern most Island of the group. It is often used as a stepping stone for yachts en route from Corsica to Elba. It is a mountainous island, reaching 447m at its northern end at Monte Arpagna. The island is steep-to and everywhere rocky, covered with maquis, and little cultivated except for the terraced slopes on the coast. The island was at one time a prison island and landing was prohibited on parts of the island. The prison buildings remain and can be visited.
