Island Ventone is the largest of the southeastern group of the Pontine Islands. The island rises to 139m in the south at Monte dell’Arco. It is sparsely covered in maquis and prickly pear and not a lot else. In Roman times the island was call Pandataria and, like Ponza, several notable undesirables were exiled here: the daughter of Caesar Augustus, Nero and the daughter of Domitian. The island acquired its present name in the Middle Ages from the winds that swept across its barren surface. Like Ponza it was colonised by the Borbouns. Both Ventotene and nearby San Stefano were penal settlements until quite recently. Under Mussolini, those of a persuasion other than Fascist were incarcerated here and on San Stefano.
